Red Alder is the most underutilized species in the history of British Columbia Forestry. Once thought of as a weed species and poisoned by forestry companies, this rapidly renewable wood is an excellent choice for manufacturing sustainable wood products designed to last a century or more.
Alder is a fast growing deciduous species and a natural nitrogen fixer for the soil. Alder generally grows to maturity in 15-25 years and rapidly reproduces within a year. The young Alders provide excellent ground cover for small animals, birds and deer.
Alder is currently used for a variety of specialty interior products including furniture, cabinets, floors and doors.
Known for its character, this fast growing and semi knotty hardwood produces a fine grain with natural tan, rusty red and brown tones. Its black odd shaped knots accompany figured grain patterns that are normally found in expensive hardwoods. Alder has excellent finishing qualities and can be stained to compliment many design themes or finished with a clear to exhibit its natural beauty. Alder can be is used to mimic woods like American Black Cherry and Walnut.
